Assimilate more! Consume less!

In my twenties I was reading some sport nutrition stuff online, and I read an article about digestion. I can’t remember who wrote it or where, but there was a one liner in it that stuck with me, and it went something like this:

“It’s not the total amount of protein consumed that matters, it’s the total amount of protein assimilated that matters.”

It really had an impact on me, like an “aha!” moment. What it means is that you can eat 200 grams of protein per day, but if your body can’t break it down and integrate it into new tissue very well, then you’ll just pass a lot of it through. Optimizing your protein intake depends not only on hitting a target amount per day, but also on optimizing protein digestion. Protein needs to be broken down into bio-usable forms through digestion before it can be absorbed. The best ways to optimize protein digestion are a mix of methods including improving the condition of your gut, consuming more protein sources that are easily digestible, and increasing the digestibility of the protein you consume. A protease enzyme supplement like ProHydrolase helps increase the digestibility of the protein you consume, which does these things:

  • Takes full advantage of the availability of essential amino acids for building muscle and improving muscle recovery
  • Maximizes the performance benefit of protein containing foods by assisting the body in absorbing more protein rather than excreting it
  • Greatly reduces discomfort typically caused when protein is not broken down into the smallest composition

I wrote some more stuff below if you scroll down.

What’s the SUPPLEMENT FACTS label look like?

Do you really take this product?

Everyday. I’ve been using some form of a protease product since 2012 and I find it helps reduce gas after some meals, which is pretty great.

Is more better?

I’m not sure to be honest. I’ve taken tons before and it works. But so does taking the suggested serving size of 1-2 per meal. I’d rather save money and help with the digestion of many meals over the course of a time period than overdo it, so I actually stick to the recommended amount for this supplement.

How do I know it’s working?

I feel better after a meal (less gas is a big one).

Any tips for getting the most out of this?

Yes. If you’re a meat eater, I recommend taking this with meals containing a lot of meat. The bio-availability of a good protein powder is already very high, and many protein sources these days are pre-digested, so the best use of this product, in my opinion, is with meat meals. If you’re really trying to save cash, then just take a few capsules after very big protein meals. For example, after a Mongolian BBQ binge. 😉

So will this make me absorb all the protein I eat?

No, because if you consume 1000 grams of protein in a day and your body only turns over about 150 grams, then you’ll still excrete the rest even if you’ve helped turn it into highly bio-usable amino acids.

Can’t I just eat more protein?

How in the world will eating more protein help you digest and absorb more protein? That’s like saying the solution to getting a fire started with no kindling is to throw more heavy wood on it. The fire is gonna start when you break down some of that wood for kindling. The assimilation of protein into new tissue is gonna start when you break down some of that protein into bio-usable forms.

Can’t I just eat more protease containing foods?

It would add calories to your diet and it would be impossible to intake the amount of protease contained in this supplement through foods. Of course protease containing foods are almost always very healthy foods so it’s never a bad idea to include more of them. You can do your due diligence by researching online and asking for opinions, which I’ve done, and I’m sticking to tactical protease supplementation with my largest protein meals by adding a few of these ProHydrolase pills in here and there.
