Quality over quantity

When I was younger, I only bought protein on price. The absolute cheapest I could get: bulk whey concentrate. My body tolerated it less and less over time, or rather I just became more sensitive to how crappy it was. Especially when I decided to grow bigger, I needed more protein. I got tired of the mild stomach upset, gas, and occasional loose stools from crap quality whey.

The next thing I did was buy mixtures, such as rice, pea, and whey mixtures. I didn’t want my body to become intolerant to high amounts of protein powder from one source. Then the price of rice and pea protein shot up to the point they weren’t even really economical anymore for their quality.

Finally, I moved onto hydrolyzed whey isolates and decided to use a quality over quantity strategy with protein powder. I began using Hydropump whey as my sole powdered protein source. It costs more but I get to use less. My body seems to really like it as it sets and satiates wonderfully, so instead of 2 scoops per shake I usually only use 1 scoop now. And my body hasn’t become intolerant to it (because it’s an isolate protein).

Remember, a calorie isn’t a calorie! Hydropump whey isolate is perfect for low carb shakes

This year has been crazy for me. Some mornings I’m lucky enough to sleep in until 9 am, other mornings I get up to pee at 2 am and then realize how many things I have got going on and can’t get myself to sleep again. During those mornings, I don’t start with breakfast, instead I double down on my coffee and get to work on editing videos, making websites, hiking e-mail mountain, and planning my training.  I was supposed to be asleep, so why would I eat early? So I don’t eat these mornings… except, there is often a problem.

I noticed that if I ate a traditional power breakfast on these mornings, such as a hearty oatmeal, egg scramble, meat, and fresh vegetable juice, I’d interrupt my work flow with this cooking and cleanup, and then I’d have trouble getting back into the groove. I’d get sleepy soon after eating too. Should I go back to sleep then since I’m up extra early? Tried it many times and just laid in bed frustrated. These were bad times.

Then I had the idea to create myself a very low carb – protein shake for these mornings.

  • 8 oz unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 TBSP organic heavy whipping cream
  • 1 small avocado
  • 2 raw whole eggs
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 1 giant spoon of sunflower seed butter
  • 1 scoop of hydropump whey
  • 2 TBSP of cocoa powder

It takes no time to make, so if I get hungry I can whip it up and slam it down within 5 minutes. And after drinking it I always perk up and feel more motivated to work. It also helps me save my carb allowance for later in the day when I’ll need them more.  I do use Hydropump whey with this shake, for the reasons listed in the product description at the top of this page. This whole strategy has helped me out a ton this year in solving one of the  biggest bottlenecks I had when balancing my fitness business creation and my actual health and fitness itself.
